Never too old to change!!

Hello,
I am sharing some of the inspiration I got today. Do you think you are too old to change or learn? Once upon a time I thought so. If you want to become a change agent, you yourself must change. I want to learn, but if I am not willing to change my attitude I cannot learn.. learning invlolves change. It involves a lot of change for me to learn the various new technologies required for this class but I am learning them because I made a painful decision to change my ways of learning. When I look back, I am amazed that I used IMchat, webcam, pbwiki, dimdim, ning, and blogger in the past 3 months. It was not easy but if there is a will there is a way. It is hard when you have many responsibilities and several roles to play. As long as you are alive you learn. How old is too old? BTW I encouraged a 51 year old friend, persuaded her to go back to school and she started this fall. I read about a 94 year old grandma who did her masters in 2007 breaking previous records. Stopping to learn is intellectual death. Think of everyday as a new day full of possibilities. Do not be impressed by your successes or intimidated by your failures. So let us cease every opportunity to learn. "The older the fiddle the sweeter the tune" -but we are not waiting to be 94 to start but can continue until death stops us.
Mercy.

Mercy,
Great words of wisdom. It is so easy to be comfortable in our environments. I know I have been guilty of that in the past. The only way to truly grow is to change. We never know all of the exciting possibilities awaiting us.

A significant change in my life was changing careers 8 years ago to become a nurse which was the best decision of my life! Coming back to grad school was also a big change as well as moving back to Los Angeles next month after graduation.

I am a firm believer that we must not stay stagnant, but grow and challenge ourselves to future greatness.

Mercy, I enjoyed your post. I was 50 when I decided to go back to school to get my Masters and become a NP. It was something I wanted to do for a long time and the timing was right. It has been alot of work but I have enjoyed the learning. My husband watched me and decided to go back to school also and he just finished his Masters last year. We can always lead by example.

If I was too old to learn, I wouldn't be working on my doctorate!

I had a student who received his ADN when he was 78 - he was a fantastic student, too. You're very right about never being too old. :)

Thanks for the wonderful words of encouragement! It is absolutely a new and different challenge to adapt to school as you get older and have time constraints! I love learning, although I do not have all the time I would like to invest because I am going to school and working. I remember my BS degree, traditional student, PT job and enjoying learning! As Sister Roy says, humans adapt to their environment. I can not imagine not learning and suffering "intellectual death". My husband is 50 and getting ready to retire and go back to school (we could probably be lifelong students!)...BTW..Dr. A, the oldest student I taught in nursing was 63 when she started the AD program! Thanks again,

Rhonda

Hey Mercy,

great post and I agree with you 100%. I've been a student as long as I can remember. I think older students are great role models!

This makes me think of a quote that said "Learning only ceases when you die" whether we like it or not, we learn something new everyday either conciously or subconciously.
